How to Maintain Your Wood-Fired Hot Tub: The Complete Guide

Most wood-fired hot tubs don't fail because they were built badly. They fail because they weren't maintained. The good news: maintenance is simpler than most owners expect — if you know what to do, and when.

How much time does this actually take?

Most owners overestimate the maintenance burden of a wood-fired hot tub before they own one. The honest reality:

~5 min After each use
(ash + lid)
~15 min Weekly with filtration
(testing water)
~1 hour Annual deeper care
(wood oiling)

That's roughly the same time commitment as a charcoal grill or a wood-burning fireplace. Less than a swimming pool. Far less than a sauna with electrical heating systems.

Premium materials reduce this further. A fiberglass insert wipes clean in minutes. A 316 marine-grade stainless steel stove resists corrosion that would otherwise require ongoing treatment. Thermally treated pine needs oiling every 1–2 years rather than annual refinishing. The harder a hot tub is to maintain, the cheaper the materials usually are.

Water care and replacement

Water management is the most important part of maintenance — and it determines how often you'll be doing the rest of the work.

Without a filtration system

If your hot tub does not include a filtration system, replace the water after each use, or within 1–3 days at the latest. Fresh water prevents bacterial growth and mineral buildup. The integrated drain valve allows for controlled emptying.

With a filtration system installed

If your hot tub has an optional filtration system fitted:

  • Water may remain usable for up to one month, sometimes two months
  • Regular water testing and pH balancing is required
  • Follow the filtration system's specific maintenance instructions

A filtration system reduces water changes but doesn't eliminate monitoring. You're trading "drain often" for "test regularly."

Water treatment options

Your hot tub can be used with:

  • Standard spa chemicals (chlorine or active oxygen)
  • More natural water treatment solutions

When using chemicals, maintain balanced pH levels, avoid excessive dosing, and rinse surfaces periodically to prevent residue. If you prefer natural water care, plan for more frequent water replacement.

Balanced water protects the fiberglass insert, stainless steel components, and stove elements from premature wear.

Cleaning the fiberglass insert

The fiberglass insert is designed for durability and long-term resistance to cracking. Proper care preserves its strength and surface finish over time.

After draining the tub:

  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove residue
  • Use a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge for cleaning
  • Avoid harsh, acidic, or highly alkaline cleaners
  • Never use metal brushes or abrasive pads

Gentle maintenance preserves both appearance and structural integrity. Fiberglass inserts are easier to clean than wooden interiors — one of the reasons we use them in every Amber series tub.

Maintaining the stainless steel stove

The stove is the part of the hot tub that takes the most stress: direct flame, repeated heating cycles, and prolonged contact with water. The grade of steel matters significantly here.

Our stoves use AISI 316 marine-grade stainless steel, chosen for its resistance to corrosion in humid and outdoor conditions. If you're not sure what grade your stove uses, it's worth knowing the difference — it affects how much maintenance the stove needs over its lifetime.

After each heating session

  • Remove ash using the built-in ash tray (once fully cooled)
  • Ensure air vents remain clear and unobstructed

Periodically

  • Wipe exterior surfaces with a damp cloth
  • Remove soot buildup as needed
  • Inspect chimney connections

Avoid abrasive cleaning tools — they damage the protective surface that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance.

Cast iron doors and heat-resistant glass

The stove doors are made from cast iron and fitted with heat-resistant glass. Cast iron is used here specifically because it resists warping under repeated high-temperature cycles — important for maintaining proper sealing and combustion performance.

To maintain them:

  • Clean the glass only when fully cooled
  • Use a suitable fireplace glass cleaner if needed
  • Avoid abrasive tools that may scratch the surface

Keeping the glass clean improves visibility into the fire and supports efficient combustion.

Chimney and heat protection cover

The chimney includes a protective heat shield to enhance safety and reduce surface temperature around exposed areas.

Inspect the chimney periodically for:

  • Soot accumulation
  • Secure and stable connections
  • Any obstructions affecting airflow

Clear airflow improves heating efficiency, supports proper combustion, and reduces smoke.

Maintaining the thermally treated pine exterior

Thermally treated pine is built to withstand outdoor conditions, but natural wood still requires periodic care.

Every 1–2 years:

  • Clean the exterior planks
  • Apply a suitable protective oil
  • Inspect for dryness or minor surface cracks

Re-oiling preserves the wood's appearance and weather resistance. Natural color changes over time are normal and don't affect structural quality — the wood may darken or develop a silver-grey patina depending on sun and rain exposure.

Electrical components and LED lighting

Your hot tub includes LED lighting and optional electrical systems:

  • Keep the electrical box dry at all times
  • Inspect wiring seasonally for wear or damage
  • Ensure protective seals remain intact
  • Avoid directing high-pressure water toward electrical areas

The pneumatic control buttons are designed for durability and rarely fail, but a periodic visual inspection is good practice.

Insulated lid care

The insulated lid does three important jobs: reducing heating time, retaining heat between uses, and preventing debris from entering the water.

After each use:

  • Close the lid securely
  • Keep it dry when possible
  • Clean occasionally with mild soap and water

A properly closed lid can cut your firewood consumption by 30–40% over the season.

Winter care in European climates

Wood-fired hot tubs perform well in cold climates when maintained properly. The approach depends on whether you'll be using the tub during winter or not.

If used regularly during winter

Maintain appropriate water levels and keep the insulated lid securely in place whenever the tub is not in use. Protect exposed valves and fittings from freezing temperatures. Consistent attention to these details supports efficient operation through colder months.

If the hot tub will not be used during winter

The tub must be drained completely. Open all valves to allow residual water to escape. Disconnect optional heating or filtration systems where applicable. To remove water from the pipes, turn on the hydromassage and air bubble systems for a few seconds — this clears trapped water from the internal lines.

⚠ Important — warranty exclusion

Water left inside pipes, valves, or fittings during freezing conditions can expand and cause structural damage. Damage caused by freezing water is not covered by warranty. Proper winter preparation is essential.

Built to Last

The longevity of any wood-fired hot tub comes down to two things: materials and maintenance. Our Amber series uses 316 marine-grade stainless, fiberglass inserts, and thermally treated pine — chosen specifically because they reduce maintenance burden over the years.

When to call for professional support

Most maintenance is straightforward and can be done by the owner. A few situations warrant professional involvement:

  • Visible damage to the stove or chimney — cracks, warping, or persistent leaks
  • Electrical irregularities — LED lights flickering, controls unresponsive, or unusual smells from the electrical box
  • Persistent water quality problems despite balanced chemistry and regular changes
  • Structural concerns — uneven settling, fiberglass cracks, or wood damage beyond surface weathering

For Bauqua owners, our team is available directly — no call centers, no outsourced support. Reply times are typically within hours during business days.

Quick Reference

The complete maintenance schedule

After Each Use

  • Remove ash from the stove once fully cooled
  • Close the insulated lid to retain heat
  • Drain and replace water if no filtration system

Weekly (if filtration installed)

  • Test and balance water (pH and sanitizer)
  • Rinse interior surfaces if needed
  • Avoid abrasive tools or harsh cleaners

Final thoughts

Maintaining a wood-fired hot tub isn't complicated. With quality materials and consistent attention to a handful of basic tasks, your tub will perform reliably for many years.

The two factors that determine how long any wood-fired hot tub lasts: how it's built, and how it's cared for. You only control one of them after purchase — but the right materials make the maintenance side dramatically easier.
